Casa de Salud

Since the Asociación de Parteras Rosa Andrade was formed in 1994, they were lent a house in Suchitoto, which became their “Casa de salud.” They used this space to host their monthly assemblies, conduct prenatal controls, administer contraceptives, organize educational workshops and meetings, as well as  sell pupusas, clothes and furniture in order to buy contraceptives and prenatal vitamins for women in their communities. Unfortunately, they lost access to their space on January 1, 2020. The loss of a physical space is not only a direct threat to the work that they do, but it is also a threat to the solidarity that has kept this group of midwives active despite the Salvadoran government’s efforts to eradicate midwifery. Many of the midwives are older, and the association dreams of owning a space where they can train a new generation of parteras. They also dream of building a community garden, as many of their care-taking practices involve the use of medicinal herbs. With support from our fundraising efforts, the midwives are now in the process of buying their own house.
